Law Enforcement (CALEA)

Public communications services providers have an obligation to provide information to law enforcement when legally requested. This could include historical information such as calling records or identifying the subscriber associated with a phone number or an IP address. These types of records are often requested through a subpoena process. The request could be an “active monitoring” situation, where you will be asked to provide real time communications on a customer which is often referred to as a “trap and trace” or “pen register”. You may also be required to provide the full content of the requested communications.

To assist with CALEA compliances, Iowa Network Services (INS) offers Law Enforcement Services (LES) which allows INS to be your agent for interfacing with law enforcement. This service covers trap and trace and content intercept requests for broadband providers.

Having to perform these functions independently for a communications provider can be expensive and time consuming. INS’ service provides an option for outsourcing law enforcement functions.
